Direct Legal assistance provides access to justice by providing free legal advice and legal representation on a pro bono basis. This service is provided primarily to forest resource owners, that are negatively affected by large scale development projects, within their customary land/area.
This program also supports environmental Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and partner NGOs who are likely to be taken to Court due to their working collaboration with resource owners to defend their socio cultural and environmental rights. The legal assistance program comprises of two main activities. These include legal patrols and litigation. A legal patrol is ensued after a request is received from clients where further information is needed before strategizing for legal action. Once the legal patrols are completed the litigation takes precedent.
